General Description and Purpose

The Case Manager is responsible for providing counseling to Pratt Community College students experiencing social, emotional and personal difficulties. Assist individuals dealing with issues associated with addictions, substance abuse, family, and relationship problems; stress management, self-esteem, depression, test anxiety and anxiety related to academic and/or life pressures. Will provide testing as appropriate for license and make referrals for services. Will be responsible for developing and implementing employee and student training programs to meet the needs of stakeholders and in accordance with college, state, and federal procedures and policy. Will demonstrate empathy with the community college student and have an ability to relate to the full range of student aspirations, abilities and educational backgrounds. Will have a demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students. Provide crisis intervention and support services as needed, including evenings and weekends. Must live within a reasonable distance of Pratt and be able to respond to after-hours emergency situations involving students as needed.

       Primary Functions/Responsibilities

  1. Assist individuals dealing with issues associated with addictions, substance abuse, family, and relationship problems; stress management; self-esteem, depression, test anxiety and anxiety related to academic and/or life pressures.
  2. Provide testing appropriate for license and to meet the needs of stakeholders and in accordance with college, state and federal procedures and policy.
  3. Demonstrate empathy with the community college student clientele and have an ability to relate to the full range of the students’ aspirations, abilities and educational backgrounds.
  4. Provide counseling for special populations to include veterans, international students and nontraditional students.
  5. Cooperate with other services, programs, and department in identifying and working with students with special needs.
  6. Provide counseling to assist students in resolving personal problems.
  7. Develop and implement employee and student training program to meet the needs of stakeholders in accordance with college, state and federal procedures and policy.
  8. Accept referrals from college personnel.
  9. Confer with College personnel regarding individual students when appropriate.
  10. Refer students to community agencies as needed.
  11. Provide crisis intervention and support services. Respond to after-hours emergency situations involving students as needed, including evenings and weekends.
  12. Participate in evaluation of counseling services and programs. Keep official records and collect data required by college policy and procedures; submit records and data in accordance with College procedures.
  13. Provide counseling resources, services, and training for students and/or employees.
  14. Assist in providing students with the tools and skills to live healthy, balanced lives.
  15. Provide educational planning, career and short-term therapeutic counseling, crisis intervention, as well as assistance in accessing and navigating institutional requirements with the goal to develop the whole student, academically, socially, and emotionally.
  16. Establish and maintain relationships with outside educational institutions, internal departments and community agencies.
  17. Serve as department liaison and on College committees as requested.
  18. Manage the delivery of individual and group counseling services, career testing, and exploration as well as student development, study, life and inter/intrapersonal skills workshops as needed.
  19. Manage the delivery of individual and emergency coverage as well as refer students to outside community health resources and other agencies.
  20. Participate in professional organizations, attend seminars, conferences, or workshops for professional development purposes as well as required for licensure.
  21. Provide assistance as needed in the areas of academic: academic advising, career counseling, basic skills assessment, student outcomes assessment, special needs services and related services.
  22. Production of reports and data concerning counseling services as requested.
  23. Coordinate academic accommodations processing and communication with all stakeholders.
  24. Maintain contact with students receiving accommodations to ensure needs are being met.
  25. Coordinate service animal accommodations processing and communication with all stakeholders.
  26. Create and maintain ongoing long-term consultative and supportive relationships with assigned students.
  27. Use knowledge of time management, study skills, test taking skills, career/life planning and other tools to help students be successful.
  28. Monitor and maintain contact with assigned students about their academic progress, attendance, and academic alerts.
  29. Meet with students on financial aid probation for failing to make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP and community with Financial Aid staff as appropriate).
  30. Communicate with advisors, instructors, activity sponsors, coaches, and residence life staff to gain an understanding of individual student needs.

  1. Must be team-oriented with the ability to work well with other staff and faculty members in the development and administration of programs within Student Success Center and throughout the College.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational and presentation skills as well as possess personal computer literacy.
  3. Ability to manage numerous tasks simultaneously as well as develop new projects and programs as directed.
  4. Ability to safeguard sensitive and/or confidential information from intentional or unintentional disclosure.
  5. Knowledge of modern counseling practices and methods
  6. Knowledge of and adherence to existing professional ethical standards.
  7. Ability to form and maintain effective counseling relationships with clients, to monitor client movement in the therapy process, and terminate the relationship in appropriate ways.
  8. Ability to plan, implement, evaluate and report activities.
  9. Ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs and workshops.
  10. Ability to maintain a consistent and dependable work schedule.
  11. Ability to occasionally travel to meetings and off campus locations for work related duties.
  12. Ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner.
  13. Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment.
  14. Must be sensitive to the attitudes of all students regardless of age and have the ability to work with a diverse group of people.
  15. Must possess good character, be a role model, have excellent organization and multi-tasking abilities, time management and communications skills and the ability to work in a team environment.

  21. Adherence to a Code of Ethics and recognized standards of practice, as regulated by the state’s counselor licensure board.
  22. Ability to relate to a diverse population.

  24. Must live within a reasonable distance of Pratt and be able to respond to after-hours emergency situations involving students as needed.
  25. Must be able to work within a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.

       Experience

  1. Minimum of two years of post-degree experience working in a clinical or educational setting as a counselor preferred.
  2. Minimum of two years’ experience in individual, group and short-term counseling, crisis intervention, substance abuse, etc. preferred.

       Education

Master’s Degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology or Social Work or a related field of study from a national or regionally-accredited institution of higher education required. Ph.D. in Counseling or related field preferred.

       Certifications and/or Licensure

Must be currently licensed, and able to practice independently, in Kansas as a Licensed Professional Counselor (L.P.C.), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or related licensure. National Certified Counselor (N.C.C.) preferred.

       Work Conditions/Environment

  1. Able to respond quickly and provide assistance in situations of health, safety and security.
  2. Must be able to walk across campus and access various types of buildings.
