Pratt Community College Hosts Kansas Community College Leadership Institute Session

PRATT, Kan. – Pratt Community College (PCC) welcomed the Kansas Community College Leadership Institute (KCCLI) Class XII to campus on Wednesday, September 9, for a full day focused on leadership development. PCC President Dr. Carl Smalls greeted the group.

 

KCCLI is a statewide leadership initiative that began in 2010 to develop strong leaders for Kansas community colleges. College presidents statewide identify promising current and emerging leaders to take part in a nine-month program featuring on-campus sessions at various colleges. Since the program began, it has produced more than 200 alumni who have advanced in their careers, and it also seeks to help participants succeed in their current positions.

 

For the Pratt session, 22 participants from KCCLI and program facilitator Lisa Perez Miller spent a day on the PCC campus focused on learning and collaboration.

 

“Leadership is not simply about preparing for the next position; it is about becoming the best leader you can be wherever you are, and understanding the impact that leadership can have on the people and communities you serve.” PCC President Dr. Carl B. Smalls also expressed, “I know firsthand the impact a leadership program can have. An experience like KCCLI doesn’t simply prepare you for a position; it can help you discover the kind of leader you want to become and, ultimately, change the trajectory of your career.”

 

The KCCLI focuses on three key areas: drafting a personal mission statement, developing a personal leadership philosophy, and carrying out a leadership project approved by the participant’s college president. The project addresses a real opportunity or challenge at their home college. Many alumni say touring various campuses is one of the program’s most valuable aspects because it lets them see firsthand the diversity among Kansas’s community colleges.
