PCC Male Athlete of The Year – Preston Hagel, Freshman

Pratt Community College freshman Preston Hagel delivered one of the most impressive seasons in recent memory, earning recognition as the 2026 KJCCC Newcomer of the Year and Wrestler of the Year. Competing at 197 pounds, Hagel also secured NJCAA All-American honors while finishing the season with an outstanding 45–6 record. His success extended beyond the mat, as he was named an NJCAA NWCA Academic All-American, maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA, and completed 101 hours of community service.

A native of Goddard, Kansas, Hagel quickly established himself as a leader within the Beaver Wrestling program, even as a true freshman. Known for his high standards and consistent work ethic, he played a key role in the team’s success throughout the 2025–2026 season. Coaches and teammates alike have praised his dedication, character, and the positive impact he brings to the program, both on the mat and in the locker room.

“Preston Hagel is very deserving of the accolades and accomplishments that he has attained throughout this 2025-2026 Season. He held a high standard for himself this year as a True Freshman and became a leader in his own way this year. He is a joy to have on the team and we cannot wait to see what he has in store for our program next season.” – Ken Kepley, Head Wrestling Coach

For Hagel, being named Athlete of the Year represents more than individual achievement. He credits the support system around him for helping him reach this milestone. From teammates and coaches to his family, each has played an important role in his journey. Wrestling has been part of his life since second grade, inspired by his father, who also competed in the sport and remains one of the most influential figures in his career.

Hagel points to the bonds within the team as one of the most meaningful aspects of his experience. Whether celebrating teammates’ successes or simply spending time together, those moments stood out most during the season. He describes the program as something that will always hold a special place in his life, emphasizing the trust and support shared among teammates and coaches, especially throughout the road to Nationals.

His time at Pratt Community College has shaped both his athletic and personal growth. While acknowledging the challenges of competing at a high level, Hagel describes his experience as one of the most rewarding of his life. He also expressed appreciation for the PCC Athletic Department’s support, highlighting the leadership’s impact on the wrestling program’s success.

Looking ahead, Hagel plans to continue both his academic and athletic career at a four-year university. Following graduation, he hopes to attend dental school and pursue a career as a dentist.
