Pratt county schools come together for concert

The Pratt Community College Performing Arts Department will host the County Wide Choral Extravaganza on March 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Carpenter Auditorium.

The concert will showcase the musical talents of Pratt county students from PCC and Skyline High School. During the evening, the choirs will sing separately and together, with additional performances by their show choirs.

“It gives all the high school and college students in Pratt County a chance to sing together and create a sense of camaraderie,” said J.J. Rupe, PCC music instructor.

Technology, diversity implemented during class assignment

Many teachers on Pratt Community College’s campus implement technology and diversity during their lectures and assignments.

Rhonda Westerhaus found a unique way incorporate both in her Children’s Literature class.
The class is watching the movie ‘Freedom Writers’ and then writing a blog about it and commenting on other students entries.

Administrators Attend National Legislative Summit

Pratt Community College President Michael Calvert, along with PCC Board of Trustees members Darrell Shumway and Jeff Shumway recently attended the Community College National Legislative Summit. The Summit took place in Washington, D.C. from Feb. 10 – 13 and sponsored by the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT).

PCC Students Honored at State Capitol

On Feb. 13, two Pratt Community College students were honored in Topeka, Kan. as members of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society. PCC’s chapter, Phi Zeta, selected Diana Lara and Katelyn Kumberg, both of Pratt, as their representatives for the 2014 Kansas All-State Academic Team.

This is a distinguished group of scholars from community colleges across the state who are selected for their academic achievements and contributions to their college and community. These students will also be eligible for the All-USA Academic Team announced later this year.

PCC Alumnus Honored

The American Association of Community Colleges recently selected former Pratt Community College student Joseph Searles III to receive the 2014 Outstanding Alumni Award. The award is given annually to former students from community colleges who are making outstanding contributions to their chosen career fields and to their communities. Searles and the other five Outstanding Alumni Award recipients will be recognized during an awards brunch at the AACC 2014 Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. next April.

Instructors Attend Seminars in Technology, Training and Psychology

Though some people assume teachers take the summer off, many educators spend the summer improving their skills, knowledge and attitudes about their chosen profession in education. At Pratt Community College, this is especially true. Teachers Rhonda Westerhaus, Joyce Frey and Junnae Landry each attended workshops that involved them in their respective areas of Technology, Teacher Training and Psychology.

AQIP visit rescheduled for December

Officials from the Higher Learning Commission have rescheduled their accreditation visit for Pratt Community College for Dec. 3 through Dec. 5. Pratt Community College was originally scheduled for a review from the Higher Learning Commission for reaccreditation purposes Oct. 24 through Oct. 26; however, the visit was postponed due to flight cancellations.

During the visit two reviewers from Community Colleges in Wyoming and Iowa will examine the institution from a functional standpoint.
