PCC to Screen “The Jayhawkers” Film

24 March 2015

On April 9, Pratt Community College will screen “The  Jayhawkers,” a 2014 film about KU basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain. The screening will begin at 7 p.m. in Carpenter Auditorium. The film’s writer, director and producer Kevin Willmott will be in attendance to speak about the making of the film and his perspective on the historical elements that created the backdrop for the story.
During Chamberlain’s years at the University of Kansas in the 1950s, a small group of unlikely allies modernized college sports in the face of segregation, serving as a parallel to the Civil Rights Movement that would transform an entire American society. The movie’s emotional climax comes during the triple overtime 1957 National Championship bout between the University of Kansas Jayhawks and their bitter rivals from the University of North Carolina, a game that is decided in the final seconds, and one that has been called the greatest in college history.
Willmott grew up in Junction City and attended graduate studies at New York University, Tisch School of the Arts, receiving several writing awards and his M.F.A. in Dramatic Writing. He is an Associate Professor in the Film Studies Department of the University of Kansas.

The screening is free and open the to the public, and is made possible by Pratt Community College, the Pratt Public Library, Blythe Family Fitness and Taylor Printing. The film is not rated, but does contain some language and implied adult elements. For more information, contact Leighanne Dean at 620-450-2113 or leighanned@prattcc.edu.
