Pratt Community College (PCC) is located in the heart of south central Kansas. Approximately 70 miles west of Wichita, Kansas, our campus is located one half mile north of Highway 54 on Highway 61. PCC offers an Agriculture program that has the great advantage of being located in one of the world's most productive ag regions. Students are able to work first-hand with livestock instead of just being taught skills and theories in a classroom. Through a variety of partnerships with area industry, students have opportunities is experience the learning on a near daily basis.
This focus on ‘hands-on’ training is apparent in the classroom. Some course examples are: horseshoeing, horsemanship, equine care and training, livestock production, artificial insemination, meats, welding and repair, horticulture as well as traditional ag classes. The small class size assures that students are people and get the attention they deserve. At PCC, students are not just numbers and the faculty and staff ensure that students have a memorable experience in their education.
PCC also offers facilities to better fit the students' needs through Huffman Arena and the Ag Activities Center. The activities center provides indoor practice areas and several buildings with stalls available to rodeo team members. A new lab facility and GPS equipment broaden the availability of new technology for students. The ag department also has a greenhouse on campus where students can study horticulture and soils. In addition to these facilities, PCC also has farm land and pasture surrounding the campus which gives students an outdoor laboratory to explore.
Ag students are kept busy at Pratt Community College. There are several active student groups based in the agriculture department. The Block and Bridle club has had nationally recognized scholars for the last eight years. Members travel to national conference annually. The college rodeo team competes in the Central Plains Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, one of the top rodeo areas in the country. For those interested in rodeo, but not wanting to compete, PCC offers Rodeo Club which is a student group supporting the sport. In addition to these activities, the college also hosts several NACTA judging teams who compete nationally in quiz bowl, livestock management, crops, ag business management, ag mechanics and horticulture. Pratt Community College brought home national championships in one or more areas each year they have competed.
The faculty at Pratt is top-notched. Five instructors offer their expertise to the program with specialties ranging from ag technology to livestock and meats to ag mechanics to ag business. Each course is taught by an instructor with years of experience and knowledge in his or her field.
Pratt Community College is an affordable option for students looking for a great ag education. Courses transfer through articulation to all four year universities in Kansas and many other larger ag programs throughout the Midwest. The faculty works with students to ensure that their credits will transfer to the institutions of their choice. For those students looking for a smaller school do complete their bachelor’s degree. Pratt Community College has teamed up with Fort Hays State University to offer the Bachelor of Technology Studies degree which can have a variety of major focuses including ag and ag power technology (mechanics). These degree programs are created from a variety of associate degree and bachelor degree classes offered on campus supplemented by some internet based courses.
