Kansas Artist to Hold Open Forum

27 March 2014

Virgil Penner is the March “Featured Artist” in the Riney Art Gallery at Pratt Community College and he will be available on Friday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to noon to meet anyone interested in visiting with him about his artwork. This is an informal question and answer session that is open to students, faculty, staff and the general public.

Penner is known for his ink drawings of homes and buildings, with an architectural perspective. Since his retirement, Penner has focused on acrylic landscape paintings. He is a 1956 graduate of Newton High School where he studied art under Marie Orr for four years. At Bethel College he took art classes and mechanical drawing classes, graduating in 1960. After college he taught in Wichita High Schools and at Bethel College.

After his retirement in 2009 from the Newton Chamber of Commerce leadership, Penner took up acrylic painting. He has exhibited in several locations in Wichita, Art Festivals in Hutchinson, Halstead, Marion, Bethel College Fall Festival, and in various galleries.

His paintings are very colorful and bright and include various styles that are developing as he continues to create his pictures. Many pieces are painted not as you see them in reality, but with an air of whimsy. He continues to paint and do ink drawings for both private and industrial clientele.

The Delmar Riney Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Gallery is also open on Saturday and Sunday, by appointment and during special events. For more information, or to be considered as a "Featured Artist of the Month", contact the Vice President of Students and Enrollment Management at lisam@prattcc.edu or 620-672-3559.
