Damon Hininger Named PCC's 2011 Outstanding Alumnus

06 May 2011

Damon Hininger attributes much of his success to his start at Pratt Community College.

This Lansing, Kan., native came to Pratt in 1988 for his freshman year of general studies and to compete in track and field events. Twenty-three years later, PCC is recognizing his phenomenal academic and professional success by naming Hininger as the 2011 Outstanding Alumnus.

"Pratt Community College provided a great beginning for my academic career," he said. "And I'm honored to be recognized with this award."

After leaving Pratt in 1989, Hininger continued his education, earned a B.S. degree at Kansas State University, and later earned an M.B.A from the Jack Massey Graduate School of Business at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. He lives with his family near Nashville, Tenn., where he is President and Chief Executive Officer of CCA (Corrections Corporation of America). With nearly 20 years of corrections experience, Hininger was promoted to his current position in August 2009, having previously been appointed as President and Chief Operating Officer in July 2008. He joined the company in 1992 as a correctional officer at Leavenworth Detention Center in Leavenworth, Kan., and has risen through the ranks.

Hininger is very active in his community serving as a member of the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville Board of Trustees and Board of Directors for Middle Tennessee Boy Scouts. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Massey School of Business, Belmont University.

Earlier this year, Hininger was named by Forbes as one of the Top 20 Most Powerful CEOs 40 and Under. He also was honored in 2010 as the Massey Graduate School Alumni of the Year.

"Damon Hininger exemplifies all the characteristics of an outstanding alum," said PCC President Dr. William Wojciechowski, "Those qualities include  exceptional leadership and character, significant career accomplishments, outstanding public service and support of Pratt Community College. We are thrilled to honor him."

Hininger first will be honored by the Pratt Community College Foundation during an invitation-only luncheon on Friday, May 13, and will receive his Outstanding Alumnus award during PCC's commencement at 4 p.m. in the Dennis Lesh Sports Arena during which he will address the graduates.
