Receptionist/Switchboard Operator - Afternoons

General Description and Purpose
The Receptionist/Switchboard operator is responsible for greeting and directing the public, both in person & on the telephone.

Primary Functions/Responsibilities

  1.  Responsible for general operation of the telephone system of the college.
  2. Accept all incoming calls and route to the appropriate offices and personnel.
  3. Take messages when individuals are not available and make sure messages are delivered.
  4. Record all outgoing long distance calls made through the switchboard and assist in their placement.
  5. Report to the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Finance and Operation, any equipment not functioning or problems with the system.
  6. In emergencies, deliver, or have delivered, messages.
  7. Be responsible for the upkeep and operation of the copy machines in the administration office and see that a supply of paper & toner is on hand at all times.
  8. Run copies for PCC employees as requested.

Coordination and Accountability Tasks
Perform other duties as assigned by the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Finance and Operations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and other Characteristics 

  1. Ability to maintain poise and communicate with individuals form various backgrounds.
  2. Ability to handle difficult inquiries with courtesy.
  3. Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  4. Must be dependable & prompt.


  1. Prior experience working on telephone system preferred.
  2. Knowledge about college programs, activities, and personnel.


  1. High school diploma or GED, or previous related experience and/or training.
  2. Prior telephone system experience preferred.
