Director of Marketing Communications and College Relations

General Description and Purpose
The Director of Marketing Communications & College Relations is responsible for the planning, development, and execution of college marketing, public relations activities, and event planning.  The Director will have a good understanding of web design, content management, and maintenance. The Director will provide content and manage a broad range of digital marketing and communications efforts including internet, mobile devices, social media, search engines, and digital media. The Director is responsible for the design, production and writing of marketing and collateral materials. The Director is supervised by the Vice President of Students & Enrollment Management and is part of the division team responsible for leading efforts in the areas of recruiting, retention, communication and service for the institution.
 
        Primary Functions/Responsibilities
        Marketing Communications

  1. Oversees the planning, development, and execution of college marketing and advertising activities. Responsibilities include market research; product marketing; new business development; marketing communications; advertising; and public relations.  Designs campaigns using direct mail, email, websites, telemarketing, catalog and marketing collateral.  Responsible for communicating consistent messages across print and electronic media.  Ensures that key, strategic messages are communicated effectively to target audiences. 
  2. Maintains and oversees College branding, logos, graphic images and enforces Style Guide criteria both internally and externally.
  3. Creates graphic layouts and designs of advertising, marketing collateral, and other published materials in print and online. Selects and arranges photos, type, illustrations, and color. Collaborates with Vice President and co-workers on concepts.
  4. Manages, oversees and develops strategies to enhance the college’s public image. Responsibilities include establishing relationships with members of the media pitching stories to publications and monitoring media coverage; identifying key messages and communicating them to college partners and associates.
  5. Oversees production of internal and external materials such as brochures, press releases, web copy, newsletters and executive presentations. Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Edits, proofreads, fact-checks, and coordinates production of a variety of marketing communications materials. Ensures that communications are accurate, clear, and complete; correct in terms of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and editorial style; and that they maintain a consistent tone and voice.
  7. Prepares institutional publications, printed and key collateral materials or coordinates such projects as needed or assigned.
  8. Purchases and places print, radio, TV, and online advertising. Negotiates rates with media outlets and recommends media buying opportunities. Conducts post-buy media analysis and tracks and reports on results
  9. Coordinates and/or takes pictures and video related to instructional, programs, events, students, and employees as needed. Edits and produces short promotional videos as needed.
  10. Writing and distributing of press releases, feature stories and editorial copy regarding instructional activities, faculty, students, including honor rolls, key events, honors, trips, radio PSAs.
  11. Maintains a media contact list and coordinates department communications for promotion internally and externally.
  12. Provides assistance and support for marketing initiatives associated with the Beaver Booster club, PCC Foundation and other college organizations as requested.
  13. Provides marketing assistance for key departments such as athletics, technical education, performing arts, student life as needed.
  14. Develops and manages a comprehensive internal communications plan to enhance organizational culture and support a climate of openness and collegiality.
  15. Provides strong leadership to internal stakeholders. Set priorities and deadlines, clearly communicate project goals and reinforce a collaborative work environment.
  16. Serves as the College contact, representative and coordinator of partnerships, consortiums as requested and support.
  17. Accepts appointment to and participates on committees as assigned.
  18. Develops and manages the advertising and marketing budget line accounts.
  19. Develops a professional development/ training program to teach effective marketing strategies and best practices for program leads (academic, technical, services).
  20. Serves as the Public Information Officer (PIO) for the institution.
  21. Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Students/Enrollment Management and/or the President. 

        Digital Communications

  1. Manages content and provides oversight of digital marketing and communications efforts including social media, internet, digital publishing, mobile delivery of content, search engines and the College website.
  2. Directs and manages the social media efforts of the College, including the development of social media policies and the management of all postings. Creates, maintains and implements digital marketing calendars.
  3. Oversees management of updates, design, and user experience on the College’s social media accounts, monitor daily messaging and posts
  4. Develops and analyzes key metrics of marketing effectiveness and costs related to digital programs. Conduct and report analysis of site and social traffic.
  5. Manages and ensures proper online messaging is relevant and monitors official College online/digital communications for accurate and consistent compliance with the standards of the Colleges’ Style Guide.
  6. Designs and implements social media strategy to align and advance the College mission, institutional aims, and goals.
  7. Develops concepts for online communication, such as websites, Web portals, and e-newsletters; and online advertising methods, such as banner ads, pop-ups, and paid search-engine placements.
  8. Maintains content, design, and updating of the college website. Provides training and serves as a web liaison with employees.  Trouble shoots the site, including content, links, and other elements, making corrections as needed or in consult with webmaster. Serves as point-of-contact for web maintenance. Plans for future changes to the website with the webmaster and VP of Students/Enrollment Management.
  9. Develops concepts and implements online communication to students, parents, school officials, such as websites, Web portals, and e-newsletters; and online advertising methods, such as banner ads, pop-ups, and paid search-engine placements.
  10. Monitors web traffic metrics and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
  11. Creates landing pages and other conversion opportunities.
  12. Proactively monitors digital marketing trends and incorporates for growth strategies as appropriate. 

        College Relations

  1. Plan, schedule, and coordinate special events including holiday, community open house, dedications, workshops, businesses on campus fair, etc.  Oversee event timelines, ordering, and logistics.
  2. Establish a campus environment which is unique and student focused and incorporates services, communication campaigns, visual strategies for events, programs and projects.
  3. Establish a series of community events/activities that engage employees and students with the community and provide networking opportunity.
  4. Provide meaningful opportunities for students to volunteer their time and energy in response to voiced community needs. To assure that the community service of students is beneficial and effective for both student volunteers and the community.  Serve as sponsor for key service organization.
  5. Assist with key campus events and activities as requested. Assist with hosting campus tours for recruiting and/or other special events as needed.
  6. Maintain knowledge of current industry practices to make recommendations as related to information design and how to improve/grow the College’s online and digital presence.
  7. Accept appointment to and participate in committees as assigned.
  8. Assist and support Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) and continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives and projects as requested.
  9. Participate in college events including: Beaver Building Days, college fairs, job fairs and other public events as requested.
  10. Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Instruction, Dean of Instruction and/or the department chair. 

      Coordination and Accountability Tasks

  1. Work with College employees and students to execute marketing and promotional initiatives.
  2. Schedule production printing and artwork requests for publication as requested.
  3. Maintain frequent contact with vice presidents/deans, faculty, athletic director and others regarding activities on campus.
  4. Assist in coordination of campus special events.
  5. Work with local and regional media in presenting pertinent information regarding the college.
  6. Gather information from other institutions and illustrate national trends that may affect the College.
  7. Serve on teams and committees and work with student leaders and clubs/organization to establish awareness of diversity through events and initiatives.

Supervise and mentor the position of Coordinator of College Relations & Student Services Assistant
 
      Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and other Characteristics

  1. Possess working knowledge of all digital marketing – internet, mobile devices, social media, search engines and digital media.
  2. Ability to analyze data to determine effectiveness of social media campaigns.
  3. Proficient with using multi-social posting programs such as Hootsuite, email marketing software such as Mailchimp.
  4. Proficient with developing social media strategies, creating and managing content, creating actionable plans.
  5. Knowledge of media editing software (photo and video).
  6. Knowledge of Google Analytics and other analytical tools.
  7. Ability to sustain communication with diverse groups, anticipate problems, reconcile conflicts and maintain a strong philosophical base for student activities.

      Experience

  1. Two years’ experience in communications, marketing, design, public relations, or comparable area required.
  2. Two years experience in coordinating programs special event planning required.
  3. Experience and skills in web design, web content maintenance and online program development required. Experience with Google analytics and Drupal preferred.
  4. Two years experience in desktop publishing required.
  5. Two years experience as a social media manager required.
  6. Experience in working in higher education preferred.
  7. Experience in coordinating programs and people successfully preferred.
  8. Portfolio review of designs, marketing plans/campaigns, photographs, business communications, web designs, required with interview.
  9. Will have a good understanding of web design and maintenance, with the ability to navigate web pages comfortably.
  10. Civic engagement service and experience preferred. 

      Education
Bachelor degree in communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, journalism, or related
field required.

      Work Conditions/Environment
Work is performed in an office setting on campus and/or remotely.  Must be able to travel independently and work in off-site locations. Requires ability to work flexible hours and be able to deal with stressful conditions in a calm and professional manner. Light lifting up to 40 pounds may be necessary on an occasional basis. Must be able to walk across campus and access various types of buildings.
 
      Other
While working remotely, must be available during regular business hours to respond in a timely manner to inquiries, attend meetings via video conferencing, conduct business, manage projects, manage digital communication flow, and effectively perform the day-to-day duties of the job. The position requires frequent contact with staff, faculty, administration and external persons which can be conducted either remotely or in-person. Position may require evening and /or weekend work.
