Students tour Westar facility

21 March 2013

Wanting to show students that what they are doing in the classroom, will be what they do in their profession, Pratt Community College's Power Lineman Instructor, Dean Senter took students to Westar Energy in Topeka.

The seven students that Senter took to the Topeka facility are PCC students who take classes at our Coffeyville site.
While in Topeka students toured the facility, went through training with different equipment and were able to have training time in their indoor training area.

"It was a great chance for them to use equipment that they don't currently get to use and see a more extravagant facility," Senter said. "It is very beneficial for them to be able to see what one of the top businesses in the industry is doing."

Senter said the group was invited to come visit because some of the Westar employees are on the advisory committee and also thought it would be a good opportunity.

While touring the students heard how employees at the company have to spend a certain amount of time training each week, which Senter said was beneficial.

"It is good for them to realize that once they are out of school the training isn't done," he said.

The facility, built within the last year, includes a four lab setting, indoor climbing area and a conference room that can divided.
