Women's Basketball Defeat Dodge in OT

14 January 2013

The women's team was back in action at home Saturday night against Dodge City. The Beavers looked very much like a team that was playing its third game in five days with limited numbers. With four players in street clothes on the bench, Pratt's defense was lethargic and let Dodge get too many easy looks in the first half as they ran to a 43-31 lead at the break. The 43 points was the most allowed by Pratt in a first half all season.

The first ten minutes of the second half looked like it would be more of the same as Dodge City push the lead to as much at 15 before the media timeout. But with about 12:00 to play in the ladies switched to a trapping zone that seemed to ignite the defense and lead to easy looks on the offensive end.

Pratt suddenly pressed back and got themselves to the free throw line to cut into the lead. Still the Beavers were down late and had to foul and hope for misses. PCC got the break they needed with 13 seconds to go Dodge split a pair of free throws and leaving their lead at 3. Out of the time out Kari Devlin caught an inbounds pass and found Maddie Pendry at about 25 feet where Pendry buried a deep three to tie the game. Dodge City, who was out of timeouts, raced back down the floor only to have their last shot swatted away by Hayli Jo Smith as time expire, forcing overtime.

In the overtime period the Beavers executed on the offensive end for the first time all night and scored 15 points in the 5 minute extra session to seal an ugly, hard-fought 84-80 win to move to 12-5 on the season. Pendry led Pratt with 23 points, Elle Stein chipped in 16 points & 13 boards, Hayli Smith and Ashri Broadwater were both in double-figures as well. Pratt's free throw shooting was stellar for the second game in a row shooting 29 for 36 (80%).

The Beavers have a huge test this week as they travel to Garden City (17-1) Wednesday who is currently ranked #10 in the nation.
