Beaver Track Opens Season at Highland

23 January 2012

The 2012 version of the Pratt Community College Track and Field team opened the season this past weekend at the Highland Open in Highland, Kan. The Beavers competed against Colby Community College, Highland Community College, Hutchinson Community College, Benedictine College, McPherson College and Haskell University. Even though it was the first meet of the new season, the results were encouraging for fifth year Head Coach Cyrus Hall.

"We competed well today," Hall said. "We are very young. We only have a couple sophomores, so we made a few mistakes that experience will remedy. I'm encouraged. And I know the kids are relieved to finally be competing instead of practicing out in the cold over and over again. And I also think they have a better understanding of what kind of competition they will be up against."

Just three girls were competing for the Beavers. Those girls were Elena Botello running the mile and 800m run, and Elizabeth Wendel and Danielle Jones throwing the shot put. Botello, started the season off with two top ten performances, placing tenth in the 800m run with a time of 2:48.15, and fifth in the mile with a 6:19.23. Botello led the mile for seven of ten laps, but just couldn't finish it out. Wendel placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 9.26m and Jones placed twelfth at 8.24m.

On the men's side, the Beavers were led by a couple freshman sprinters, Junior Doerue and Jared Walker. Both young men made the finals of the 55m dash, with Doerue finishing in second place on a photo finish and Walker finishing in sixth place. Their times were 6.45 and 6.66 respectively. Doerue's time barely missed the national qualifying mark by .01 seconds. Walker continued his strong day by placing sixth in the 200m dash and second in the 400m dash.

Also putting in a good showing was freshman Artrail Skipper. Skipper placed fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 13.17m.

Sophomore Andrew Johnson ran a solid 4:56 mile that placed him sixth. Sophomore Kelly Gosvener placed seventh in the shot put throwing a 9.68m.

The Beavers are on the road again Fri., Jan. 27 as they travel to Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan. to run at the Cavalier Night Relays. The meet will start at 5 p.m.
