Bhakta international scholarship recipient

23 May 2014

Kappa Beta Delta International Honor Society announced on May 19 that Harikrishana (Harry) Bhakta has received the 2014 Dr. Andrew V. Stevenson Merit Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for his commitment to academic excellence and active involvement in his community.

Bhakta, of Medicine Lodge, just completed his freshman year at Pratt Community College and is planning to come back to finish his degree this next school year. Upon completion of his Associate degree, he is hoping to transfer to Wichita State University to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science and then plans to continue his education with a Master’s in Business Administration.

“He is Vice President of Kappa Beta Delta this year, and once again, he is always eager to help out when needed…Harry played an active role in our induction ceremony this semester, and I plan on him participating in our KBD sponsored tours of Koch Industries and Grant Thornton Accounting firms this semester,” Carol S. Ricke, Chair, Social Sciences, Business, and HPER, PCC.

KBD is an international honor society that encourages and recognizes scholarship and accomplishment among students of business, management, and administration pursuing associate degrees.

After Bhakta’s family moved to the United States in 2008, Bhakta discovered his passion for the world of business. He has excelled academically at Pratt and has taken advantage of opportunities to become involved on campus within the Alpha Psi chapter of Kappa Beta Delta and within his greater community, including entertaining children in hospitals and emergency rooms.

Bhakta has a passion for providing higher education opportunities to those who cannot afford it. His plan is to “create and spearhead an organization which will monetarily assist students who cannot afford to go to college through work study opportunities…[he] also plans to establish various generous scholarships for students in the community.”

The Dr. Andrew V. Stevenson Merit Scholarship is awarded each year to a student who is a member of Kappa Beta Delta International Honor Society, carries a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, is currently enrolled in college courses, and has performed merited community service in the past year.
