RN Refresher Course FAQs
Question:
When is the RN Refresher Course offerered?
Answer:
Pending interest, the next class will be offered the Fall of 2013 or 2014.
Question:
Do I have to have my License to begin this course?
Answer:
Yes. This is a course for licensed nurses with no restrictions on their license who have for some reason not been active in their practice for a minimum of five (5) years. However, people who have not passed NCLEX-RN® exam can take Part I and II didactic but not the clinical portion.
Question:
How long is the Course?
Answer:
This is a 2 part course. The first part begins in the fall (usually October) and goes through to the winter/spring term with an online theory portion and Clinical Skills/Simulation Lab and Clinical portion. The second part begins in February and goes to the end of the spring term May. It has an online theory portion as the first part 6 weeks and also a Clinical portion (usually 8 weeks).
Question:
Will I have to do Clinicals?
Answer:
Yes there are 180 clinical hours with this course. We split the hours up within the 2 parts, 90 hours in Part I and 90 hours in Part II.
Question:
Are there any Health Requirements?
Answer:
Yes we utilize the Certified Background Check through Magnus. We expect that all this will be done before class begins in October, so that there will not be any issues when Clinical begins in December. All this material will be sent to you upon Admission.
Question:
What do you mean by Online Theory?
Answer:
The beginning of the 2 Parts of the courses is 6 weeks of review of systems with online assignments, lectures, discussion forums, presentations, quizzes, and exams. You need to be able to be online at least a minimum of 10 hours weekly. You will be graded on your participation in the Online Discussion Forum, Quizzes, assignments, and Exams. At the end of the 6 weeks is when you will do the Clinical portions of the curriculum.
Question:
Will we need to spend time at the Pratt Community College Campus?
Answer:
Yes, at the beginning of the Clinical Portion for the first part we will meet at the Pratt Campus for four full days of skills review and simulation training. This does count as 32 hours of your clinical time. The instructor will explain where the hours are taken off for the specific areas of Clinical in the field.
Question:
How will I know where my clinical will occur? Do I have to set these up?
Answer:
When you begin Part I you will have access to a number of Contracted Facilities by Pratt. You will be choosing one of these and then YOU are responsible to tell the instructor which Facility you would like to utilize for your clinical experiences. We try to make sure that your first choice is utilized, but because of many nursing schools you may need to choose a second choice. After the instructor has spoken to the facility’s contact person the instructor will contact you with the specific person/s you are to contact to set up your hours with them. YOU are responsible to set up the hours and then to make that information known to your instructor. It is a process, so please be patient with the Instructors and the facilities.
We are sure we have not covered all the questions that may come up. So if you have a question not answered here you can e-mail the Chandler School of Nursing and Allied Health at: nursinginfo@prattcc.edu. We are excited you are coming back into nursing. We need all the best nurses we can get.
