Eric Thompson

Eric Thompson is entering his fourth season at Pratt Community College. After working with the Beavers’ hitters and outfielders in 2009, Thompson entered the 2010 season as the Beavers’ Pitching Coach, and will hold that same title in 2012.

He spent 2007-2008 as the pitching coach at Lawrence High School. During his two years at LHS, the Chesty Lions finished 3rd in the 6A state tournament twice.   Eric helped eight players move on to college baseball during his tenure with the Lions.

During the summer of 2008, Thompson joined the coaching staff of the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League. The Cape League is considered the finest collegiate summer baseball league in the country. He helped the Commodores earn a trip to the Cape League playoffs for the second consecutive year. Thompson assisted with the Falmouth hitters, including the Cape League’s MVP, AJ Pollock of Notre Dame and the Cape League’s batting champion, Jimmy Cesario of Houston University. In 2009, Thompson again helped with the Commodores’ hitters. The Falmouth hitters were lead by All-Stars Brian Fletcher (Auburn), BA Vollmuth (Southern Miss), and Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville St.). Cunningham was also the Cape League’s batting champ and was voted as the league’s Top Pro Prospect by professional scouts.

Coach Thompson returned to Falmouth in 2010 and helped the Commodores earn their third playoff birth in four years.  Thompson coached the Falmouth hitters, including Cape League All-Stars Andrew Susac (Oregon State), KC Serna (Oregon), and Kevin Medrano (Missouri State).  Medrano and Susac were named to the Baseball America Top 30 Cape League Prospects list.

Prior to his time in the Cape Cod League, Thompson coached the Kansas City Sluggers summer and fall teams for six years. He coached both the pitchers and hitters on very successful and nationally respected teams. Sixty players from those teams went on the play collegiately.

Thompson’s collegiate playing career began at Barton County Community College where he played both basketball and baseball for the Cougars. On the basketball court, Eric was named to the Jayhawk Conference All-Freshman team during the 1997-1998 season.   On the baseball field, he played first base and pitched for the Cougars. He finished his playing career at the University of Kansas.   During his senior year, Thompson led the KU pitching staff in appearances with 22. He also won the Fireman of the Year Award as the team’s best relief pitcher in 2001.

Coach Thompson was an all-state performer in baseball, basketball, and football at Gardner Edgerton High School.   He was a member of the 1996 basketball state championship team. In 2005, Thompson was inducted into the Gardner-Edgerton High School Hall of Fame.  He was drafted in the 25th round of the 1997 amateur baseball draft by the Chicago White Sox.

He is married to Stephanie Thompson, who is currently the head women’s basketball coach at PCC.
