West of Wichita Drawing Exhibit

Release Date:
Monday, January 11, 2010

The first art exhibit of Spring semester will open Tuesday, January 12, in the Delmar Riney Gallery at Pratt Community College.  This drawing exhibit is titled  West of Wichita and will be on display from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until January 29.

West of Wichita showcases three artists’ approach to drawing as a method of delineation. Through the act of drawing, these artists examine the unique relationships and connections that comprise our lives.

Amber Vanhatala Stene lives in Flagstaff, AZ and works as an Instructor at Northern Arizona University. A graduate of Wichita State University with a Masters in Fine Art, her work is focused on the social dynamics of exclusion and inclusion, specifically on the search for acceptance. That search is an ongoing negotiation of our individual standing in society.

Emily Brookover, a native of Kansas, is currently a candidate for the MFA Degree at Wichita State University. In her work, she engages with objects that have come to shape her life. The objects serve as metaphorical signifiers for situations and relationships, real or invented, which connect to the past and present.

Jodi Lightner, a Kansas native, will complete the MFA Degree at Wichita State University in Spring of 2010. Through her work, she identifies with a place by locating the ideas and elements that give it meaning. Drawing from being in an environment and the connections through current and previous experience, she draws an understanding of its identity.
