PCC H1N1 Response Plan

Release Date:
Sunday, November 15, 2009

The Pratt Community College H1N1 response plan is in effect immediately. Students with symptoms or concerns about the flu are encouraged to visit with the Student Health or the Director of Residence Life as soon as possible.

Some of the symptoms of H1N1 are similar to the symptoms of the seasonal flu and include a fever higher than 100 degrees, body aches, coughing, sore throat, respiratory congestion and in some cases, diarrhea and vomiting.

After informing Student Health, the students’ symptoms will be evaluated and the appropriate measures will be taken. Students will be educated on what to do, and given supplies, which include, pain/fever reducer, OTC cough/cold medicines, disposable thermometers, masks, Gatorade packets, etc. Students will be monitored, and will need to stay in contact with the director of residence life.

The student is responsible for contacting their instructors either by phone or email to let them know they are sick, and to make arrangements to make up coursework.

If a student contracts H1N1, they are encouraged to go home, if possible. This will enable the student to be more comfortable, help them to relax and not risk infecting others. However, if the student cannot go home, appropriate accommodations will be made.

Once you have had H1N1; it is okay for you to return to class/work only after you have been without a temperature naturally (not using temperature reducing medicine) for 24 hours.

To help stay healthy: wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, stay home when you are sick to avoid spreading the illness to others. Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue and properly dispose of used tissues. Stay healthy by eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting adequate rest and exercise.
